RMIT INTERSECT was a program of activities that operated until 2022. INTERSECT was originally managed by RMIT University School of Art and comprised onsite and offsite creative projects, exhibitions, residencies, laboratories and critical discussion. It acted as a conduit to connect the University’s students, staff and research into the broader global arts community. At the core of its program was a simple goal: to enrich, challenge and empower the RMIT University community by connecting with, nurturing and celebrating innovative and diverse art practices. In 2019 RMIT INTERSECT became one of the nine sites of RMIT Culture.
RMIT INTERSECT included the following projects:
PROJECT SPACE / SPARE ROOM (CLOSED) - PROJECT SPACE was a gallery that linked prominent exemplars of practice-based research with Melbourne’s creative communities through a dynamic program of contemporary art projects. SPARE ROOM was the gallery adjacent to PROJECT SPACE. It was a small space for big ideas. PROJECT SPACE and SPARE ROOM were closed in March 2022. The site is now RMIT PlaceLab.
SITE EIGHT (CURRENTLY MANAGED BY RMIT SCHOOL OF ART) - SITE EIGHT (previously RMIT School of Art Gallery) was a gallery situated in the heart of the School. It derived its name from its physical location in room 8 of RMIT's Building 2. SITE EIGHT was a dynamic multi-purpose art space that professionally services the various needs of the School’s programs and student communities. The gallery maintained a regular public program of exhibitions from 2005 to 2014, then shifted to a publicly programmed model on an ad hoc basis until 2019. SITE EIGHT remained under the management of RMIT School of Art when RMIT INTERSECT became a part of RMIT Culture in 2019.
SITUATE (CLOSED) - SITUATE was a residency program for artists, curators and researchers. SITUATE connected people through art by creating onsite real-time opportunities for creative experimentation, cross-cultural dialogue and global mobility. At its core, this project believed that one of the best ways to enable and generate a great discussion is to simply shorten the physical distance between two ideas. SITUATE was absorbed into RMIT Culture’s Residency Programs in 2019 when RMIT INTERSECT became a part of RMIT Culture.
SPEAKER (CLOSED) - Speaker was a lecture and talks program co-managed by RMIT INTERSECT and RMIT School of Art Art History + Theory + Culture. It was closed in 2019.
LIGHTSCAPES (CURRENTLY MANAGED BY RMIT SCHOOL OF ART) - LIGHTSCAPES was a series of three programmed light box exhibition spaces, Lightwell, Rodda Lane, and Knox Place (Melbourne Central). LIGHTSCAPES remained under the management of RMIT School of Art when RMIT INTERSECT became a part of RMIT Culture in 2019.
RMIT INTERSECT was closed in 2022 and does not maintain staff or an office.
